Critical components of a membrane switch keyboard include several precision-made layers, each serving a dedicated purpose to deliver reliable, long-term performance in high-use environments: Graphic Overlay – This uppermost layer forms the visible user interface and is often coated with durable, UV-resistant graphic inks to prevent fading. Domes – Domes are integral to tactile membrane keypads, providing a physical response or ‘snap’ when pressed. Plastic (polyester or polycarbonate) is common for most consumer goods, while metal domes are used for higher precision and longer service life. Dome size, shape (such as four-legged, triangular, round, or oblong), and material directly influence tactility, key travel, and actuation force. Spacer – The spacer maintains circuit separation and defines travel distance for each keystroke. It contains punctured holes (die-cut windows) directly beneath each keypad position to permit contact between the overlay and the conductive circuit layer, preserving the reliability of the switch actuation. Circuit Layer – The circuitry, often produced via screen printing (with silver, carbon, or copper-based conductive inks) or photochemical etching, forms the functional heart of the device. When the overlay is pressed down the conductive traces connect to the lower circuit layer, which sends a signal to a printed circuit board. Non-tactile membrane switches are more resilient than tactile membrane switches and they are completely sheltered from the outside environment. This allows them to be rated for three times as many activations as a tactile membrane switch.
